A SMELTING furnace has been granted permission to operate near a popular beauty spot - despite the objections of residents nearby. Jeff Armstrong is expanding his scrap yard business at Rowhurst Close Industrial Estate, Chesterton, next to Apedale Country Park. Since 2005 it has dismantled cars, selling parts and recycling oil and batteries, but the addition of a furnace means he can now melt the aluminium into high-value ingots. The retrospective application was unanimously approved by Staffordshire County Council's planning committee yesterday. However, residents had raised concerns about pollution, noise as well as impact upon views across the area.
