Perodua to revive used-car business by June

RAWANG (March 19, 2012): Perusahaan Otomobil Kedua Sdn Bhd (Perodua) will reintroduce its used-car business, which ceased operations two years ago, by the middle of the year.

The company will commence the used-car business in the Klang Valley. That being said, the used-car operation is more to supplement and complement our new vehicle sales at this stage," he added.

"Profitability would not be our main driver, at least in the first phase.

As a result, the company does not expect its used-car business to report a profit for the first few years.

Nevertheless, he expects Perodua to turn a profit in the second phase of the business, when it evolves to become a full-fledged used-car dealer, buying and reselling vehicles not only from Perodua clients.

"We didn't have the people with that expert advice and experience then. We want to have a relook at an entire business plan, and make sure that the process and support systems are in place (before reintroducing it)," said Aminar.

"We do not have a specific time-frame (for the second phase).

The compact car maker first entered the used-car segment in August 2008, but ceased the operations two years later due to, it is understood, low volume sales, which made it unprofitable to continue.

He said under Phase 1 of its trade-in programme, Perodua will work with other used-car dealers.

"In doing so, we are also able to keep the resale the necessity of Perodua cars at a certain price level.

"We will focus on getting it (business model) right before replicating it to other regions.
